# Set up Canary

> Create a maintainable foundation and send the first work order to your team.

This quickstart gives administrators and maintenance leaders a practical setup order. A small, consistent equipment model makes daily work easier to find and report on.

## Before you begin

Use the Canary web app for organization setup. Decide who will administer the workspace and which people need full maintenance access, request-only access, or assignment identities.

## 1. Set organization defaults

1. Open **Settings > Organization**.
2. Confirm the organization name and logo.
3. Choose the default work-order visibility.
4. Set the currency used to label cost values.
5. Configure PDF accent, footer, and sign-off layout when your team exports work orders.

Changing the currency changes the label applied to stored amounts. Stored and historical numeric values remain unchanged.

## 2. Invite people and create teams

1. Open **Users** and invite each person with the appropriate organization role.
2. Open **Teams** and group people by crew, trade, site, or responsibility.
3. Set availability and labor rates when you use schedule capacity or labor costing.

See [Users and teams](/help/admin/users-and-teams) for role and deletion safeguards.

## 3. Build the equipment structure

1. Create top-level locations, then add direct sublocations where needed.
2. Create assets and assign each one to its operating location.
3. Add parent and sub-asset relationships only where the team maintains that component separately.
4. Add identifiers to records technicians should open by scanning.

See [Manage equipment](/help/managing-equipment/overview) for the full relationship model.

## 4. Add the supporting records you use

Turn on the relevant modules in **Settings > Features**, then add:

* Parts and location-level stock for inventory control
* Meters for usage, counters, condition values, or on/off state
* Work-order templates and procedures for repeatable work
* Maintenance plans for fixed-calendar preventive work
* Automations for meter-triggered actions

Enable required modules first. For example, Automations requires Meters.

## 5. Create and complete a work order

1. Open **Work Orders** and select **New Work Order**.
2. Add a clear title, asset or location, priority, due date, and assignee.
3. Add a procedure and planned parts when the job needs them.
4. Start the job, complete the procedure, record parts used, add completion evidence, and complete it.

Use [Create a work order](/help/work-orders/create) for field-by-field guidance.

## 6. Prepare field access

1. Have technicians install Canary on iOS or Android and sign in to the same organization.
2. Print and place Canary labels where scanning is useful.
3. Test one label from the mobile scanner.
4. Confirm the technician can open and update an assigned work order.

## Setup check

Your foundation is ready when a technician can find an asset, open its work, follow the attached procedure, record parts used, and complete the job with the resulting history visible.
