# Create a Procedure

> Build a reusable, versioned set of fields for repeatable work.

Create a Procedure when technicians should capture the same actions, readings, decisions, or evidence each time a job runs.

## Build a Procedure

1. Open **Procedures**.
2. Select **New Procedure**.
3. Under **Basic Information**, enter the required **Procedure Name**.
4. Add **Est. Duration** in minutes and a **Description** when useful.
5. Under **Procedure Tags**, add the assets and locations where this Procedure applies.
6. Under **Procedure Structure**, select **Add Section** to group related work, or **Add Field** to add a root-level field.
7. Give each field a clear **Field Name** and choose its type.
8. Add help text, mark the field **Required**, and configure units, limits, or options where the type supports them.
9. Drag sections and fields into execution order.
10. Select **Create Procedure**.

## Write effective fields

Start labels with the action or observation the technician should make:

* Inspect belt tension.
* Record motor temperature in °C.
* Select Pass, Flag, or Fail for the guard condition.
* Upload a picture of the damaged panel.
* Sign after lockout is removed.

Use help text for acceptance criteria, safe-work context, or measurement instructions. Use **Heading** for orientation only; headings stay outside the progress count.

For **Multiple Choice** and **Checklist**, add options in the order technicians should see them. Multiple Choice stores one selected option. Checklist stores one or more selected options.

## Use tags intentionally

Asset and location tags describe where the Procedure applies. Tag the narrowest useful scope: a specific machine for an equipment-only instruction, or a location for a site-wide routine.

Tags preserve the intended asset and location context on the Procedure. To place the Procedure on every work order created from a pattern, also add it as the **Default Procedure** on a [Work Order Template](/help/work-orders/templates).

## Revise or reuse a Procedure

Open a Procedure and use:

* **Edit** to publish updated authoring content as the next template version.
* **Duplicate** to create a separate Procedure with copied sections, fields, options, and tags.
* **Use in New Work Order** to open a new work-order form with the Procedure selected.
* **Delete** to remove it from future work while preserving existing work-order snapshots and responses.

Review existing Work Order Templates and Maintenance Plans when a revised Procedure should become the source for future generated work.
