# Update status and assignment

> Keep work-order progress, ownership, and completion history accurate.

Status communicates the job's stage. Assignment communicates who owns the next action.

## Change status on the web

1. Open the work order.
2. Select **Edit**.
3. Choose **Open**, **On Hold**, **In Progress**, or **Done** under **Status**.
4. Select **Update**.

On mobile, use the status controls to start, pause, complete, or reopen work. Use the actions menu for **Mark as Canceled** or **Mark as Skipped**.

## What completion changes

Moving a work order to **Done**:

* records the completion time and the person who completed it;
* preserves the asset and location context used for maintenance history;
* issues any pending linked-part quantities when Parts is enabled; and
* moves a linked approved request to **Completed**.

When Parts is disabled at completion, Canary completes the work order and marks its pending inventory for explicit reconciliation. An admin can use the recovery controls to reconcile that inventory later.

Reopening a Done work order clears its completion metadata and returns a linked completed request to **Approved**. Issued-part history remains preserved.

## Assign a user or team

1. Open the work order and select **Edit**.
2. Open **Assigned To**.
3. Choose a person under **Users**, or choose a group under **Teams**.
4. Select **Update**.

A work order holds one assignment target. Choosing a user clears a team assignment, and choosing a team clears a user assignment. Canary notifies new assignees and subscribes them to relevant work-order updates.

Team assignment is useful while a planner is choosing a technician. A later user assignment gives one person direct ownership. The [Schedule](/help/reports/schedule) can publish the technician, start time, and estimated hours together.

## Find current work

Use **To Do** for Open, In Progress, and On Hold work. Use **Done** for Done, Canceled, and Skipped records.

Available filters include **Assigned to**, **Due Date**, **Location**, **Priority**, and **Work Type**. Due-date options include **Today**, **Tomorrow**, **Next 7 Days**, **Next 30 Days**, **This Month**, and **Overdue**.
