A location represents where maintenance work happens or where equipment and inventory are kept. Assets use locations for physical placement; the asset hierarchy separately describes equipment composition.

Location structure

Canary supports two location levels:
  • A top-level location, such as a plant or warehouse
  • A direct sublocation, such as a line, room, or storeroom
A sublocation is the final level. A top-level location with children stays at the top level.

Create a location

  1. Open Assets and switch to Locations.
  2. Select New Location.
  3. Enter the name and optional description or image.
  4. Choose a parent location when creating a direct area within a site.
  5. Add custom fields and identifiers as needed.
  6. Save the location.

Use a location

Open a location to review its parent or children, assets, parts stock, meters, identifiers, and custom fields. Assign area-level work to a location and equipment-specific work to an asset.

Use locations on mobile

  1. Open Assets, then switch to Locations.
  2. Search the top-level locations and open one to review its sublocations, assets, parts, meters, and work orders.
  3. Select Create Sub-Location when the site needs one direct child location.
  4. Select Use in New Work Order to open a new job with the location already selected.
You can also scan a location identifier from the Location picker while creating or editing a work order. Create top-level locations and edit existing location records in the web app.

Move a location relationship

  1. Open the location and select Edit.
  2. Choose or clear the parent.
  3. Save the location.
Canary enforces the two-level structure during the change.

Delete a location safely

Location deletion is permanent and has no restore workflow. Before deleting:
  1. Move or delete every child location.
  2. Move assets and meters to active targets.
  3. Relocate parts inventory.
  4. Resolve work orders, procedures, templates, requests, portals, identifiers, custom fields, and automations that reference the location.
  5. Select Delete after Canary reports that the location has no dependencies.
Historical and operational dependencies intentionally block deletion to preserve every location reference.
